NRS 493 Topic 3 Assignment PICOT Question Paper - Decreasing Surgical Site Infections Grand Canyon 2023
PICOT Question The PICOT question posed is: In adult patients undergoing surgery, how does implementing evidence-based guidelines for wound preparation, sterilization of instruments, postoperative care, and surveillance of patients for signs of infection (intervention) compared to not having these guidelines implemented (comparison) affect the rate of surgical site infections(outcome) within six months (time)? The PICOT question is focused on addressing the clinical problem of surgical site infections (SSIs) (“Editorial Board,” 2022). SSIs are a common complication of surgery and can lead to increased morbidity and mortality rates, particularly in the postoperative period. The proposed nursing intervention to address this problem is to implement evidence-based guidelines for wound preparation, sterilization of instruments, postoperative care, and surveillance of patients for signs of infection, compared to needing to have these guidelines implemented. This intervention could decrease the rate of SSIs, resulting in improved patient outcomes, decreased morbidity and mortality rates, and decreased costs associated with hospitalization and treatment. The timeframe needed to implement the change process is six months.
