Week 3 Discussion – Evaluating Sources To me the definition of expert is someone who has a wide knowledge of a specific topic. Experts can acquire such knowledge through education or experience. Al l the knowledge they know can be spread by teaching others or through practice like doctors. It has been known that opinions can be influenced according to information you know about, along with certain beliefs. But facts are also very important whenever someone creates an opinion on a topic. Without certain facts it can persuade a person’s opinion in the wrong way, information lead it more in the right direction. Facts in making judgement allow people to have a reason for their opinion. When people question their opinions they can get them facts to back up why their opinion is theirs. I would say that Dr. Facione’s claim that “the SPLC is an expert on hate in America”(Facione & Gittens, 2016) as not an expert. As stated by Robinson, “But the organization has long been dysfunctional in even deeper ways, and the story of Dees and the SPLC is useful for illustrating some of the worst and most hypocritical tendencies in American liberalism” (2019). Yes the organization help fight hate group but the organization was under the impression that they actually did help with hate crimes because of the people that ran the organization. I think knowing some background did influence my opinion on SPLC. This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :53:37 GMT -05:00
