BTEC Science Unit 4: Laboratory Techniques and their Application is a course designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in science. This unit focuses on developing the knowledge and skills required to conduct laboratory experiments and analyze data using various laboratory techniques. The course covers a wide range of laboratory techniques, including spectroscopy, chromatography, electrophoresis, and microscopy. The unit also covers safety measures and precautions that must be taken while conducting experiments in a laboratory. The course is divided into several modules, each focusing on a specific laboratory technique. In each module, students learn about the theoretical principles underlying the technique, the equipment required to conduct the experiment, and the steps involved in conducting the experiment. They also learn about the types of data that can be collected using the technique and how to analyze the data. The course is designed to be hands-on, with students conducting experiments in a laboratory setting. They are taught how to prepare samples, operate laboratory equipment, and analyze the results of their experiments. They also learn how to write laboratory reports and present their findings in a clear and concise manner. At the end of the course, students are expected to have a solid understanding of laboratory techniques and their applications. They should be able to conduct experiments independently, analyze data, and draw conclusions based on their findings. They should also be able to communicate their findings effectively to others. Overall, BTEC Science Unit 4: Laboratory Techniques and their Application is an excellent course for students who are interested in pursuing a career in science or who are interested in learning more about laboratory techniques and their applications. The course provides students with a solid foundation in laboratory techniques and prepares them for further study or for entry into the workforce.

Learning Aim C:
Laboratory Techniques and their Application (Explore manufacturing
techniques and testing methods for an organic solid)

C.P5
Correctly prepare and test the purity of an organic solid and draw
conclusions:

Aim:
To prepare a sample of Aspirin (2-Acetoxybenzoic Acid) and check
its purity by recording its melting point, against a pure sample of
Aspirin.
Introduction:

What is aspirin used for?

Aspirin is used to treat fever and mild to moderate discomfort associated with illnesses such
as muscular pains, toothaches, the common cold, and headaches. It may also be used to
treat pain and swelling associated with illnesses such as arthritis. Aspirin is a salicylate and
a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID). It reduces pain and swelling by
inhibiting a natural chemical in your body. Before treating a youngster under the age of 12,
see your doctor. To avoid blood clots, your doctor may prescribe a low-dose aspirin. This
impact lowers the chance of having a stroke or having a heart attack. If you have recently
had artery-clogging surgery (such as bypass surgery, carotid endarterectomy, or coronary
stent), your doctor may refer you to a specialist. Overall, it also prevents patients from
having blood clots.[1]

1

,What is the aim of my investigation for aspirin?

The aim for my investigation to make aspirin is to first of all follow all of the health and safety
regulations and to be cautious of any Hazards that is in the practical and to do this I have to
start to make a table of hazard and what it can can cause for example making a table of the
equipments what it is used for and precautions. However, this is not just it. I have also to
note down what to wear for my investigation. This could include a lab coat, goggles and
much more so let’s begin.

Safety regulations:

Hazard symbols and causes:

[2]
So this hazard symbol is a Toxic symbol and this symbol means that it indicates life
threatening effects which means it could kill you.
However, we must also avoid skin contacts and to do this we have to wear our safety
gadgets and those are as follows:
-Goggles
-lab coat
-lab gloves
-And also if you have long hair you must tie it up so no chemicals catch.

[3]

This is an environmental hazard symbol and this symbol suggests that it is harmful to the
environment and even toxic to aquatic organisms.
And to avoid any of this we have to use this chemical properly and not put the chemicals on
the sea as it could kill aquatic life.

2

, [4]
This is a corrosive symbol and what this symbol means is that it could cause skin burns and
it can also damage your body such as the eyes if you're not using goggles and not handling
the chemical properly. Furthermore, it doesn’t only damage us it could also damage surfaces
for example like tables, metals and much more.

[5]
This is a moderate hazard symbol and what it does is if you are not careful with the chemical
it may irritate your skin so to avoid this you should keep it away from the skin and the eyes
as a precaution.

[6]
This is a flammable symbol and what that means is that when this chemical is exposed to
heat then there will be fire giving its flame out. So to avoid this we must be careful when
handling this chemical.

Here are the following equipment that we will be using for the practical:

- distilled water in a wash bottle
- (2-hydroxybenzenecarboxylic) Salicylic acid
- A spatula
- Concentrated sulfuric acid
- A stirring rod
- A filtration apparatus with reduced pressure
- Ethanoic anhydride
- Gauze
- Tripod
- Bunsen burner
