PROBLEMATIQUE:

I. JUNK FOOD IS VICIOUS -> How is it dangerous?
 Social

Also good vision : fat belly can make you earn a living in some African countries: it is a sign of success

Children from the United States view an average of one food commercial for every five minutes of
television watched, according to a study from the University of Minnesota. According to the World
Health Organization, advertisements can significantly influence food preferences and consumption.
The impact is especially acute for young children under 10 years old, who tend to view ads as
unbiased sources of information, making it more difficult for them to respond judiciously to
marketing, found researchers from the University of Minnesota.

Coca cola: names campaign, enormous budget => results -> prove that adverts do have a
considerable impact on junk food consumption

I. How is Junk food dangerous?

 Dangerous for health

Diabetes : 1 person every 6 sec

1/5 black child American is obese

½ black American child will develop a diabetes

¼ Hispanic child

 Dangerous for the environment

environmental-practices-are-wholly-unsustainable/ -> not much info, but environment + health

https://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/10-ways-fast-food-is-destroying-the-world/ ->
excellent! just prove the value of the media

 Dangerous for societies and economical systems (ex: Mexico); suffering populations
(socioeconomical consequences) -> Transition: and what if it wasn’t their fault, but the soda
and junk food companies one?

obesity-prevalence-map-race-ethnicity-2018-2020-508.pdf

II. How is it made dangerous? -> Junk food companies are really good at selling their
products

https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/08/09/coca-cola-funds-scientists-who-shift-blame-for-obesity-
away-from-bad-diets/ very complete, focusing on coca cola case ; NY article 2015

 Marketing

Target young people and poor people

 Commissions of corrupted scientists

Steve Blair : 2008-2015 : + de 3.5 M dollars to finance researches

 Junk food and sodas companies flee polemics
 They fake investing themselves in people’s health
 They create distraction (accusing other things form being responsible of obesity and other
diseases relied to a bad alimentation)
