Running head: SPIRITUAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND REFLECTION
According to Lunder, Furlan, and Simonic, “ Spirituality is considered to be one of the patient's vital signs and should be routinely screened and assessed. Research in spiritual care should be ongoing for all palliative care patients as well as for those with specific needs such as mental, neurological, or cognitive impairment” (2011). It is important as healthcare professionals
to keep this in mind in our everyday practices. Caring for a patient is never easy when they are facing end of life or serious health complications but healthcare professionals can make it easier or take some of the ‘burden’ away by remaining hopeful and supportive in the faith of the patient. “Spiritual needs assessments vary significantly along the dimensions of content and domains. These needs assessments have the potential to deepen our insight and to identify those who are most at risk for spiritual distress” (Lunder, Furlan, Simonic, 2011).
This author conducted an interview based on Joint Commission Standards of Spiritual Needs Assessments of a person of Roman Catholic faith. In previous years this individual (M.L.)
has been faced with several episodes of illness, death and near death in her family that has drawn
her back to the Catholic Church and closer to God. The interviewer will assess the spiritual needs
of the interviewee during these trying times and provide a Question and Answer formatted text of the interview, as well as, analyze the interview by discussing what went well, what barriers and/or challenges were present during the interview, how the spiritual assessment tool can help to provide appropriate interventions to meet faith based needs of M.L., and whether or not stress and illness amplified the spiritual concerns and needs.
Part One: Interview
In the following dialogue you will read the questions asked, along with the given responses, in regard to a Spiritual Needs Assessment. The interviewee is M.L., a 59 year old married female. M.L. has a daughter that had a near death experience shortly after High School
