Supply chain = een netwerk van activiteiten om afgewerkte producten aan klanten te leveren
• Leveranciers leveren grondstoffen en componenten
• Fabrikant zet deze materialen om in afgewerkte producten
• Producten via distributiecentra en/of groothandelaren distribueren naar detailhandelaren
• Detailhandelaar verkoopt afgewerkte producten aan de eindklant

Uitzondering: reverse logistics (vb. recycling, fouten, …)
• Startpunt: fabriek = de plaats waar goederen worden geproduceerd
• ‘Upstream’ = naar links, richting de leveranciers

Tier 2 = waar tier 1 leveranciers hun materialen halen netwerk van leveranciers

Supply chain management (SCM) = bedrijfsfunctie die de coördinatie verzorgt van:
• Goederenstroom van leveranciers naar eindklanten
• Delen van informatie: verkoopprognoses, verkoopgegevens, promoties, voorraadniveaus, ...
• Tussen alle leden van de toeleveringsketen: leveranciers, intern, transport, derden, ...
• Om de waarde voor de klant te maximaliseren en een concurrentievoordeel te behalen

SCM verbindt de activiteiten van verschillende partners met verschillende productieprocessen
