QUESTIONS
1. One of the short term solutions to overcrowding used in the UK, was to house
offenders in ships anchored offshore. What are your opinion on this matter within a
South African context? (10)
2. Ms A (22 years old) is a heroin user. She grew up with her mother and stepfather.
The stepfather had an alcohol problem and physically abused Ms A and her mother.
She ran away from home when she was 15 years old and stayed with friends from
time to time. During this time, she met Mr B. they had an on-and-off relationship.
She got into a fight with her child’s father and she stabbed him to death.
She was
sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment and her daughter, 14 months old
at the time,
was able to stay with her for her first few months in the correctional centre.
Ms A and Mr B had an abusive relationship and both used drugs. They did not work
and they lived on the SASSA grant that they got for their child. Mr B did odd jobs
from time to time. To support their drug habit, they stole from their families. Since the
murder, neither Ms A’s family nor her deceased partner’s family want to
have any
contact with her.
2.1 What will happen to the child when she turns two years old? Fully discuss how
the child will be dealt with and include information on the CSA and the White Paper
(2005), as well as any other Acts that are relevant. (15)
2.2 Which aspects will you attend to if you assess and screen this female offender,
who has an addiction to heroin? Include the reasons why you suspect she started to
use drugs, the category that this drug falls into, how it influenced her day-day
functioning. (15)
2.3 Ms. A was voluntarily tested for HIV and she tested positive. What procedures
will you follow as the social worker/case manager dealing with this offender? (10)
3. Fully discuss elderly offenders as a special population within correctional
facilities. Start your discussion with the following:
a) Distinguish between three categories of aged offenders. (6)
b) Focus on their unique needs, and the problems encountered when dealing with an
aging correctional environment. (6)
c) How will these offenders be screened within DCS? (8)
