You are the correctional official who has to assess an offender. Individualise the offender
and identify the dynamic and static risk factors for the individual. Work out a

Also, provide guidelines to the case manager regarding the offender.

, Question 1

In his or her field, the correctional official must become a specialist and a professional because
correctional personnel that work in prisons must have a higher degree of skill, which includes the
ability to understand the social dynamics that are frequent in a correctional setting. Correctional
officers play a unique position since they are on the front lines, overseeing and supervising
offenders. A correctional official can be the most influential person in an offender's life, influencing
the success of the many treatment programs that the criminal participates in while incarcerated.

To work in a penitentiary environment, a correctional official must have specialized abilities such as:

Corrections as a human service occupation

Human service employees must have a fundamental understanding of human behaviour and be able
to perform a basic offender assessment, construct credible estimates, and make appropriate
judgments. This will allow them to make judgments that will aid the offender's rehabilitation while
also considering the needs of other offenders and officials in the community. All of this adds up to a
professional demeanour in the performance of their duties. With regards to the case study the
correctional officer needs to be aware that Mr D is a serial sexual offender, and the appropriate
treatment plan needs to be provided to him to enable rehabilitation and combat reoffending.

Custody vs treatment role

The correctional officer is tasked with achieving two opposing goals: confinement and treatment.
Their duty to society is to safeguard it and guarantee that offenders are confined through suitable
behavioural protocols which is stated as the goal of detention. The goal of therapy is for officials to
provide constructive treatment that will result in criminals being freed as productive members of
society. The fundamental responsibility of the correctional official is to guarantee that security and
order are always maintained and that convicts do not escape from the facility. The modern
correctional official can improve the health, welfare, safety, and security of all inmates inside
correctional institutions by having a basic understanding of behavioural sciences. Correctional
officers also informally partake in the roles of psychologists, legal advisors, information agents, and
counsellors. Correctional officers also serve in a variety of different positions, including security
officers, disciplinarian, liaison officer between offenders and staff, behavioural technologist,
milieu setter, educator, administrative officer, and blue-collar worker. With regards to Mr D in the
case study, the correctional official needs to ensure that Mr D is receiving appropriate treatment or
his past transgressions and that is will not be a risk to his fellow inmates and correctional officers.

Due to the significant risk factors in Mr D’s case, highly skilled correctional officials need to be
assigned to him due to his many transgressions of sexual assault, rape, and gang affiliations. Prison
guards need to be on high alert with regards to his whereabouts in the prison and who he associates
himself with to ensure that no inmates or correctional officers can be harmed or injured by Mr D.
Intense and regular therapy and guidance sessions will be needed to assess his many years of
trauma and to combat reoffending. Prison officers need to inform nurses to be vigilant when dealing
with Mr D due to his many rape chargers. Correctional officers will have to constantly guard against
being manipulated and thereby becoming Mr D’s next targets.
