What is change management?
“Change management is the application of a structured process and set of tools for leading the
people side of change to a desired outcome
“The central issue to creating change is never just strategy, structure, culture or systems. The
core of the matter is always about changing behaviour of people. How they see and think
about what is new or proposed.”
Change is the process of moving from one state (current) to another state (future).
Change approach of Balogun
,Cameron & green:
Change leaders need to take into account different dimensions:
outcomes
Interests
Emotions
Change management:
Individual change
Learning = the process of acquiring knowledge through experience which leads to a change in
behaviour
If you learn, you automatically change
You do something (activist), you reflect on it (reflector), you draw conclusions (theorist), you
do things differently in the future (pragmatist)
,There are 4 main approaches in individual change
Behavioural:
How can you change the behaviour of someone else?
Rewarding & punishing (Pavlov)
Focus is on a change in behaviour of managers and employees and not on more efficient
processes for example financial reinforcements or non-financial reinforcements (feedback,
compliments)
Cognitive:
More focus on the brain instead of visual
behaviour
Changing thinking processes
Rokeach: belief system theory. Values of an
individual influence their believes and thus
their behaviour
Positive listing, visualization, pattern breaking
Psychodynamic
When facing change in the external world, individuals act differently because of different
psychological states
Kubler-Ross model (5 stages)
- Denial
- Anger
- Bargaining
- Depression
- Acceptance
Useful for managers to understand possible
reactions to change
, Also the coping cycle from Carnall could be linked to this approach.
Humanistic psychology
The importance of subjective
awareness: love, creativity,
growth, self-actualization,
responsibility, meaning
Effective managers have high
emotional self-awareness and
could engage with others
How people react to change
-The thoughtful realist: cautious and careful about change
If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it
-The thoughtful innovators: generate concepts that represent how things should be
Let’s think ahead
-The action-oriented realists: energy and enthusiasm to get things done
Let’s just do it!
-The action-oriented innovators: move into new areas and soon
Let’s change it!
