student must:
• be admitted to the Ohio University School of Nursing • must
have successfully completed NRSE 4510 or concurrent.

Course Description
The NRSE 4560, Gerontologic Nursing Care course focuses on the theoretical foundations of the
study of aging and the biological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual needs of the elderly. This
course also addresses professional nursing roles that assist older adults in maintaining wellness
and coping with chronic alterations in health.

Course Topics
There are five (5) modules in this course. Each module represents one week of activity.
• Gerontological nursing
• Major biological, psychological and sociological theories of aging
• Acute and chronic co-morbid physical and mental conditions and associated
treatments
• Nursing strategies and evidence-based practices
• Role and care of the elderly across populations/cultures

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Describe the ANA standards and scope of practice for gerontological nursing
• Contrast theories of aging
• Explain the interaction between normal aging and acute and chronic co-morbid physical
conditions.
