How do zoos respond to an animal escape
• Category 1 and 2
○ Report - if you spot an animal out this is to be
reported to head keeper/animal 1
○ State the animal, its location, where it is heading
○ Check the enclosure - where it has escaped from,
head count to check no other animals have
escaped, ensures accommodation is secure to
prevent escape.
○ Control visitors and contractors and get them
somewhere safe to ensure safety
○ Alert emergency services in case of escape from
zoo perimeter
○ Alert vet and fire arms team to tranquillise/kill
animals
○ Maintain visual contact with animal and keep
good communication
○ Recapture animal to ensure safety of
animals/visitors
○ All clear signal is given when the animal is
recaptured or removed from site
