Geo-information is the information connected to a location of earth.

Geo-information science consists of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing.

Geo-data is at the basis of (5 M’s):

1. Mapping + measurements
2. Monitoring
3. Modelling
4. Management



Week 1, day 1: Afternoon lecture
Three main aspects of reality one would like to describe:

- Thematic description (what?)
- Geometrical description (where?) who?
- Temporal description (when?)

Data modelling consists of four main steps:

1. Spatial perception
2. Spatial representation
3. Data structure
4. Database and application

Spatial representation is about the things that are important with respect to definition, level of
detail and scales.

Two types of phenomena:

1. Virtual phenomena (are based on administrative, legislative or conceptual construct)
2. Tangible phenomena (are based on physical, grown or constructed presence)

When something is continuous, the location of that phenomena (in the form of a field)
determines the value. When something is discrete, the boundary of that phenomena (in the
form of an object) determines the value.
