,Introduction
There are many scientific organisations, all specialising in different areas
of science. This means that every organisation will perform different
experiments and techniques. In this report I will be focusing on a scientific
organisation and researching the various activities and experiments they
conduct within their departments. There are many health and safety
legislations that these organisations must follow and comply to in order
for these activities to run smoothly and be successful without any injuries.
I will be looking at what measures these scientific organisations take in
order to comply to these health and safety legislations.

Organisation: GSK
GlaxoSmithKline Plc is a British pharmaceutical business that engages in the
research, development, and manufacture of pharmaceutical medications,
vaccines, and consumer healthcare products. It has research and development
centres in the United States, Belgium, and China, as well as the United Kingdom.
Pharmaceuticals, Vaccines, Consumer Healthcare, and Corporate Executive
Team are the company's segments and what they focus on. Tablets,
creams/ointments, inhalers, injections, liquids, and sterile items are among the
company's product compositions. Pharmaceuticals is responsible for the
development of drugs for respiratory and infectious disorders, cancer, and
immuno-inflammation. The Vaccinations sector develops vaccines for children
and adults to prevent diseases such as hepatitis A and B, tetanus, measles,
influenza, and bacterial meningitis. Oral health, pain relief, respiratory, nutrition
and gastrointestinal, and skin health are among the categories in which the
Consumer Healthcare business develops and markets brands.


Health and safety work act 1974
The Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 (also known as HASAW 1974) is a law
that establishes the foundation for managing workplace health and safety in the
United Kingdom. The act outlines the general responsibilities of everyone in most
workplaces including every worker (from employers and employees to managers
etc.) for preserving health and safety. There are additional particular laws for
industries that operate in a higher-risk environment (e.g. chemical
manufacturing). The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the government-
appointed organisation in responsible for administering health and safety laws in
the workplace in the United Kingdom. The legislation can be summarised into
key points:
- Provide a safe working environment: This assures that the premises
are in good working order. Factors like fire safety, hygiene, waste
management, and the handling of hazardous materials are considered.
- Provide safe equipment: Workplace equipment, such as computers and
electronic devices, must be maintained to ensure that it is safe to use.
This would normally entail regular safety inspections by an appropriate
party and a process for reporting any faults so that they can be remedied.
- Appropriate staff training: It's essential to surround yourself with
responsible and capable employees in order to maintain a safe workplace.
This includes onsite training to ensure that all employees are appropriately
trained to operate equipment as well as general health and safety
training, such as manual handling and fire safety.

, - Risk assessments: The Health and Safety Work Act requires thorough
risk assessments so that companies can implement suitable preventative
measures for each risk identified.
- Health and safety managed by a qualified individual: a responsible
individual would be in charge of ensuring that all health and safety
responsibilities are carried out and followed by employees. This can
include doing routine safety inspections, managing day-to-day operations,
and cooperating with safety representatives across the organization.

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
The Health and Safety Act of 1974 was reinforced by the Management of
Health and Safety at Work Regulations of 1999. They clearly state what
employers must do to manage health and safety, and they apply to all
workplace activities. Employers and employees are both responsible for
maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, according to the legislation. In
terms of what employers, self-employed individuals, and employees must
do to protect people's health and safety while at work, the Management of
Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 are more explicit than the
HASAW 1974. All of these groups of people in every industry are subject
to the regulations.

Risk assessments are one of the requirements that employers must follow
in order to detect potential threats to employee health and safety, as well
as anybody else who may be affected by their work activity. Any
significant findings must be recorded by employers of five or more
employees. Employers must next make provisions for adopting health and
safety measures to control the hazards identified by the risk assessment
as a result of conducting the risk assessment. The General Prevention
Principles should be followed.

When a risk assessment determines that an employee's health needs to
be monitored, a system of regular checks must be implemented. These
are used to detect illness triggered by working circumstances such as
noise, vibration, chemicals, or dust early enough to avoid serious damage
or worsening. Finally, the risk assessment should specify the measures to
be followed in the event of a major or imminent threat.

Employers are obligated by law to designate one or more competent
people to assist them in completing their workplace health, safety, and
welfare responsibilities. An employer, an employee, or an external
individual such as a Health and Safety Consultant can all be considered
competent. A person must possess the required skills, knowledge, and
experience in order to be competent. It's vital to remember that even if
the employer appoints a competent person, the employer still has the
overall legal responsibility for the organisation's health and safety.


Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE is personal protective equipment that protects workers from health
and safety hazards at work. Safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-
