, The Cold War

What

● The struggle between the USA and USSR which emerged as superpowers after World
War II.
● Lasted from 1945 - 1990
● The USA was supported by western countries (the West) while the USSR was supported
by the communist governments of the Eastern bloc.
● It was a clash between Communism and capitalism.
● Known as the Cold War as it never developed into an actual war but was referred to as a
"proxy war", a war where the two superpowers never participated in the war themselves
but rather used their allies and support.
● The Cold War caused political crises and military conflicts in many areas.

Why

● There was distrust between the USA and USSR since the Bolsheviks overthrew the
Russian Tsar and implemented a communist government in 1917.
● During the Russian civil war in 1918 - 1921, the USA sent troops to fight against the
Bolsheviks trying to reinstate the Tsar. Did not succeed.
● USA has good ties against Hitler during 1939 - 1945 (World War II)
● In 1941 the USA, USSR and Britain formed the "Grand Alliance" to defeat Hitler.
