BIOS 242 Week 5 Discussion; Adaptive Immunity
The doctor is very correct to say that B cells will take care of the bacterial infection thatBrucewasdiagnosedwith.Bcellsarelymphocytes, orthecellsoftheadaptiveimmunesystem, that can effectively fight off several common viruses and bacteria. B cells are obtained from thebone marrow and play a variety of crucial roles in the adaptive immune system. Not only arethey involved with the production of antibodies, but B cells also take part in the secretion ofcytokine and antigen presentation. Besides, the development of appropriate lymphoidarchitecture necessitates B cells. During an infection, the outside of bacteria cells containsforeign markers or antigens. On encountering these antigens, B cells become activated. B cellsrespond to bacterial infection by differentiating into plasma cells – factories that produceantibodies in the body (Alberts et al., 2017). The antibodies bind particularly to the foreignantigen, like a bacterium, and inactivate it by occluding its ability to bind to receptors on hostcells.
