Fall 2021 BIOL 370 Midterm 1

This final is worth 15% of your final course grade and is administered (almost entirely) through
Canvas. The midterm itself is open for 6 hours on Oct. 12 (from 2pm to 8pm), but once it is opened,
you have 75 minutes to complete the exam. Make sure you start the exam early enough to ensure
you have the entire time available to you to write it (e.g. start no later than 6:45 pm).

You have the choice to come to our usual classroom from 2 to 3:30 pm to write your midterm there.
We will be able to provide extension cables for charging, but you will need to bring your own laptop.

Instructions:

1. The exam is closed book. In an online course, this means that answers that are "cut and pasted"
from the textbook, lectures, or online sources will be considered plagiarism, which is a serious
academic offense. You may use a calculator, and your own notes.

2. Cheating is taken extremely seriously as it is an academic integrity violation. Examples of
cheating in an online exam include: copying and pasting answers from your textbook, working with
other students, and copying and pasting answers from internet sources. Any evidence of cheating
will be dealt with in accordance with UBC’s policy on academic integrity. We will be checking for
originality, correspondence with answers from other students, time usage, and other markers of
cheating will be examined.

3. Hints on time allocation: Look at the number of marks each question is worth. Plan to spend 1.5
minute per mark. There will be a total of 21 questions: 1 pledge question (1 mark), 9 MC (1 mark
each), 4 fill-in-the-blank (3 marks each), and 7 short answer (4 marks each). Make sure you leave
yourself enough time to complete all questions.

4. Special note on calculations: Clearly show all of your work for each step. Final answer must
include units and sign (+ or -). It is ok to round the final answer (not intermediate steps) to the

nearest integer (0.5 and up round to next integer, < 0.5 round down).

5. Diagrams, drawings and tables are allowed as long as they are clearly drawn and well labeled.
Any diagrams used must be drawn by the student (NOT downloaded). They may be used to
complement the answer, but unless noted otherwise the actual answer must be written in text clearly.
Diagrams must be uploaded to particular questions (click the three dots beside the question to upload
an image).

6. Mac Users: Please note that Safari is causing problems with images. We highly recommend Mac
users use Chrome or Firefox for this exam.

7. The teaching team will be available in a Zoom room ("Midterm 1") during the open period of the
midterm.
