A review of It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover is the New York bestselling author of many novels, such as
Maybe Not, It Starts With Us, and Ugly Love. Hoover is an American
author of romance and young adult fiction. Many of her books were
published by her before being chosen by a publishing house. She was born
on December 1979, in Texas. In October 2022, she sold more than 21
million books. She worked for many years as a social worker; at WIC
(nutrition program for women and children) she started her writing career
by borrowing her mother’s laptop during her off hours. After finishing the
novel, she gave it to her mother as a Christmas gift, and later she published
it to share with family and friends. Slammed was her first novel, which
appeared on the USA bestselling books list.

It Ends With Us is a romance novel about Lily who witnessed her mother
getting abused by her father, she felt helpless because she couldn’t do anything about it. She
moves to Boston. There, she meets someone named Ryle, who she gets in love with. But
everything doesn’t seem to go well. The perfection of life falls apart, which leads to
heartbreaking moments and unexpected decisions. "Maybe love isn't something that comes
full circle. It just ebbs and flows, in and out, just like the people in our lives." (p.217) Not
everything goes as we expect, sometimes we expect more things in people, but we get less,
and after we wake up, we realize we deserve more. Lily realizes she must move on and let her
loved things go.

This novel is divided into 34 chapters, each chapter begins with a new event. The story is told
from the first person of view, through this becomes the reader emotionally invested in Lily’s
story. Abuse and violence are the most important theme in this story. “You can stop
swimming now, Lily. We finally reached the shore.” (p.367). Lily tries to start a new life
after her toxic past, but she couldn’t escape from it. Unexpectedly it becomes a part of her
life, where she must decide, survive it or make a cycle of violence in the future.

Colleen combined a love story with modern daily realism, a place where real life and stories
meet. This makes the reader sympathize with the story. The main character: Lilly, never had
an easy life, she never gave up and worked hard to move up to the next step in her life. This
book taught me how women may feel in situations of domestic violence by someone they
love. The author used this topic in her book in a professional way, you may feel in love with
an abuser, but you hesitate between giving him a second chance or making an end of it.
