P3 – Outline how an organisation motivates its employees

Motivation is about inspiring people to increase their will power and sustaining them to perform
to their best ability.

Initially, there are various ways in which Matthew Boulton College can motivate its employees.
This process can increase productivity in the workplace and thus help to achieve goals, aims and
objectives and increase standards. However, the whole process of motivating staff also bears
limitations as the organisation will have to go through great effort and there are cost
implications involved.

To begin with, one of the main ways of motivating employees is through financial rewards such
as bonuses or increased salary. In certain cases, the college can offer a quality related bonus pay,
depending on employees’ standard of tasks, person records, or achievements. This will give the
employee the motivation to complete tasks to a high standard and have the desire to further
excel in the future. This will also encourage others to perform better and thus create a more
productive manpower to achieve goals. However, this should only provide if there is apparent
proof that the employee is constantly working hard as the bonus factor should under no
circumstances negatively affect the quality of service being provided around the college. In
addition to this, the college can also complement its staff by offering awards or promotions. This
will encourage them to work harder as they will be aware that they will obtain something extra
in return.

Moreover, another way in which Matthew Boulton College can motivate its employees is by
giving sufficient rest hours, breaks and holidays. The college can also improve its facilities such as
the staff room, sports hall, gym and hub as these enable the staff and others to socialise and feel
at ease with others. This can increase productivity in the organisation as employees will be more
relaxed and willing to perform to their best ability as they are being treated well. Changing and
updating products and services can also motivate employees as they might feel that the
organisation is concerned about getting them to perform to their best ability through the use of
new technology.
In other words, by creating an environment that meets the needs of all the teachers, the college
can help make working fun and the employees will most probably find it easier to achieve their
goals. Therefore, while taking note that the college is taking their needs into consideration, they
might push themselves to work harder. Furthermore, Matthew Boulton College can also
motivate employees by allowing them to contribute to decisions that might affect them. This will
make them feel important and well treated. As a result, this can positively influence them to
perform to their best ability. However, this has both benefits and disadvantages. That is, this
process can increase working efficiency in the college. Nevertheless, this bears a lot of cost and
effort on behalf of the management team.

Additionally, Matthew Boulton College can also take a step to motivate its employees by
providing them with a safe and secure workplace.
