Gibson's theory of direct perception
● The environment supplies us with all that we need for perception
○ Sufficient context to make most perceptual decisions, relative to the lab
approach
○ The lab approach should be similar to the real world

Template theory
● A template that is in your mind that matches the correct object
● A highly detailed representation that must match perfectly for perception issues of
size, orientation and non-standard presentation (feasibility)

What are the challenges to the template theory?
● I may need a much bigger brain to memorize All the template
● Not the best representation of our own understanding of the world

How do we know which letter or object matches?
● Innate ability

Feature analysis theories
● The theory argues that we understand our surroundings by identifying elements and
pieces that make up the world
○ Identify a combination of features used for perceptual recognition
■ Recognize the parts that make up the letter
■ Compare the features to another letter
■ Find the best matches

Pandemonium model

Pattern recognition model
● Use of parallel distributed processing to model feature analysis theories of text and
words

, Recognition by components
● Recognize the object as geons
● Challenge:
○ Texture and colour matter as well!
○ There is differences between personal objects from others

Constructive Perception
● Use our knowledge and expectation to shape our world
● The perception of a stimulus is informed by the cognitive process
○ Our perception forms the world we experience, and affected
● Letter identification task

Pattern recognition systems
● Feature analysis system hypothesis
● Configurational system hypothesis

● Faces vs house
○ People tend to focus on the individual parts of the face, whereas the house is
focused as a whole
