Party Factions
Factions - Groups within a political party which often take different views on some issues
The USA’s political parties are not monolithic, uniform bodies
They share a similar ideology and will rally around candidates at general election
time, but delve deeper and tensions and rivalries are not hard to find
Within each party there are conflicts, with different factions vying to influence party
policy and/or to get candidates of their particular persuasion into either Congress or
the White House
The popularity of these factions can ebb and flow and it should be remembered that,
while there is conflict and competition within parties, there is also considerable
intra-party cooperation.
Each party can be divided into 3 broad factions or groups:
Democrats: liberal/progressives, moderates, and conservatives
Republicans: moderates, social conservatives, and fiscal conservatives
