Character List & Discussion (Karakter Lys en Gesprek)
Protagonist (Protagonis), Greg Owen
● Greg is in matric at Lawson College where he’s the head boy (hoofseun) and plays the
wing (vleuel) in the first rugby team.
● He’s good in academics (akademie) and his dad expects nine distinctions
(onderskeidings) from him at the end of the year.
● Every time something reminds him of his brother, John, and his suicide (selfmood) Greg
shows his emotional (emosionele) side. He is confronted by death (gekonfronteer met
die dood) and the pressure (druk) his dad put on John being transferred to him.
● Greg and his mom get along well (kom goed oor die weg), but Greg’s dad is autocratic
(outokraties) and they don’t have a good relationship (het nie ‘n goeie verhouding nie). Yet
Greg still wants his dad’s approval (goedkeuring). Later in the book, Greg realises that he
can never satisfy his dad’s expectations (verwagtinge).
● Greg is new to hacking (kuberkraak) and is sucked into it at the cost (ten koste) of his
academics and sport. He trusts (vertrou) Eckardt’s education and follows him into the
underworld. He knows that what he’s doing is illegal (onwettig), but loves the power
(mag) he feels as “G-4ce). It is also a rebellion (rebel) against his dad and the school.
Antagonist (Antagonis), Eckardt Wilken
● Eckardt is a new matric learner at Lawson College and according to Greg, he has an
attitude (houding)
● He jogs (draf) every morning and reads often
● He is a loner (buitestaander) and keeps to himself at social gatherings
● Eckardt’s eyes and sometimes his voice reminds Greg of his brother
● Eckardt knows a lot about computers and Greg respects (respekteer) him for it
● Eckardt doesn’t talk about his past
