Sports Dietitian:
o Registered dietitian with specific education and experience in sports nutrition
Sports nutrition coach:
o Professional not registered dietitian but has basic training in nutrition and exercise science
Responsibilities of the nutritionist include the following:
o Personalized nutritional counseling: weight loss and weight gain, strategies to improve performance,
menu planning, dietary supplements
o Dietary analysis of food records
o Nutritional education: presentations and handouts
o Referral and treatment of eating disorders
Steps in Nutrition coaching
1. Defining athlete goals + identifying coaches goals
2. Needs analysis (current diet, other considerations, sport etc.)
3. Work with athlete to develop plan that fits their lifestyle, taste preference, including:
Appropriate calorie level
Macronutrients and micronutrients in recommended amounts
Adequate fluids and electrolytes
Supplements necessary to help correct nutrient deficiency
