Chapter 11
Nuclear Model of the atom
- Nucleus
o positively charged
o contains protons
o contains neutrons (no charge)
- Remaining of the atom
o mostly empty space
o contains electrons (-1 charge)
Dual Natural of light
- light act as a wave
- Different wave weight carries different amounts of
energy
- Atom can give off light
o First must receive energy and become excited
o Energy is released in the form of photon
o The energy of photon corresponds exactly to the energy change experienced by
the emitting atom
- Atomic states
o Excited state – atom with excess energy
o Ground state – atom in the lowest possible state
Energy level Diagram
- Quantized Energy level
o Since only certain energy changes occur the
H atom must contain discrete energy levels
o The energy level of All atoms is quantized
The Bohr model of the atom
- Quantized energy levels
- Electron moves in a circular orbit
- Electron jumps between levels by absorbing or emitting a photon of a particular
wavelength
