Assignment 1

Tesco:
Tesco is a leading supermarket retailer with over
450,000 employees who serve millions of customers
every week. They have over 6,800 shops around the
world.
It was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a group of
market stalls. The name first appeared in 1924 when he
purchased a shipment of tea from T.E. Stockwell.
They’re names were abbreviated to create the brand
Tesco.

At the end of the first day of selling items he made
a profit £1 on sales of £4. In the 1930’s he bought
land in north London to build a warehouse and a
headquarters. In 1937 he was seen to be buying
new stores across London into suburbs and cities.
During the war jack introduced rationing ahead of
the government so it meant that everybody got the
same excluding whether they were rich or poor. In
its 2018/2019 financial
year, Tesco's annual revenue amounted to almost
52 billion British pounds in the United Kingdom.
Tesco have expanded into a global company having stores (some with different
names such as ‘jacks’). The business
has adapted to changes in
technology and services by
introducing ‘Tesco Clubcard’ and self-
service checkouts. They don’t just
provide groceries; they have
insurance and mobile subsidiaries
within the company. Tesco is also in
a high position within the market
compared to Sainsbury’s or Asda as
they have the bigger market share.
