Teaching IELTS Assignment – Listening and Speaking 2023 (tefl level 5 I-to-i ) Analyze the information in the class summary. What are your learners’ strengths and weaknesses? The class summary indicates that the student’s strengths are in reading and writing, particularly reading where most have a band score of 7. Areas of weakness include listening and speaking skills which both average on a band grade of 5.75. Which two skills have you chosen to teach in this lesson? Why? It can be seen in the class summary that listening and speaking skills require the most improvement, with a class average of 5.7 for both skills which is significantly lower than their reading and writing scores. The final grade for the IELTS exam is based on a combination is based on all four of the skills, therefore it is important and necessary to strengthen weaker areas as doing so will increase the overall band score. Listening and speaking skills are also essential part of our everyday lives, they are imperative for communication and having conversations. To have productive discussions on any topic students need to be able to express themselves and their ideas clearly, concisely and confidently. By integrating these two skills in one lesson it will allow for plenty of conversation and exchanging of ideas, which will ultimately help promote an inclusive, collaborative learning environment especially taking into consideration that all of the students come from different backgrounds. Teaching IELTS Assignment 2 Which lesson topic have you chosen? Why? The topic I have chosen to use for this lesson is ‘health and fitness’. This topic is interesting and widely relevant to all students regardless of their age or cultural background. At some point in their lives, everyone will have come across this subject or will have had their own experiences relating to health. In recent times and especially more so now due to the pandemic, the topic has become increasingly more popular this is why I believe it is important to equip students with the vocabulary and knowledge need to be able to discuss and share their thoughts, ideas and opinions. Furthermore, this knowledge is functional and will better their understanding on health and related behavior’s and may even encourage the students to take measures to lead a healthier lifestyle. It is also not uncommon for questions about to health and fitness to appear in the IELTS exam, therefore, I believe that it is a good idea for students to learn common vocabulary related to health. Teaching the students useful and specific vocabulary relating to this topic and allowing them to practice these through listening and speaking activities will assist the students in becoming more confident, this topic is also one that can be used in a variety of scenarios as it is relevant to everyone. It is also noted that Ana, one of the students wishes to train as a nurse in the UK, which further reinforces the relevancy of this topic. Teaching IELTS Assignment 3 Lesson Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to… • Utilize and comprehend vocabulary related to the topic of health and fitness. • Discuss and speak about their own experiences in relation to health and fitness. • Listen for specific information in relation to the topic of health and fitness. Lesson Outcomes: By the end of the lesson, students will have… • Reviewed and practiced idioms relating to health. • Practiced listening for specific information. • Practiced discussing how they could improve their own health and fitness. • Practiced speaking on various subjects relating to the topic • Summarized information that they listened to and speak on the contents of what they heard. Anticipated difficulties: • The students have varying backgrounds and there is a presence of multiple languages in the classroom, this may cause confusion for some of the students. • Because the students have different L1, some parts of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary may be easier or harder for some of the students. • Student’s abilities vary and some of the tasks may not be useful to every student. • The age range of the students vary significantly from 19-37 years of age, this will mean that they have different interests, backgrounds and motivations. Suggested solutions: • Rules will be established that forbids the use of any other language other than the target language, this will reduce chances of confusion and will also reinforce the use of English. • Individual attention and focus can be given to those falling behind or struggling as this is a smaller class. Stronger students can also be paired with weaker ones to assist them in bettering their skill and understanding. • Topic-based classes mean that multiple skills will be practiced throughout the lesson which will ensure it is useful to all students and encouraging all to learn and participate. • Effort must be made to include a variety of activities that are engaging, interactive and inclusive. Teaching IELTS Assignment 4 Stage Name Stage Aim Length of Stage (minutes) Interaction Pattern Procedure Warmer To get students to transition from their L1 to the target language.
