, QUESTION 1
1.1) Discuss Seligman’s THREE pathways to a happy life.
1. A pleasant life, we can also say life of enjoyment. Seligman
experiments how people optimally experience positive feelings,
thoughts, and emotion that’s part or normal and healthy living. (a
pleasant life includes relationships, hobbies, interests, and
entertainment that one enjoys). Seligman asserts that a pleasant life is
the most temporary element of happiness and may be the least
important part of authentic happiness.
2. A good life, we can also say life of engagement. Seligman looks at
the beneficial effects of involvement, fascination and flow that are felt
by individuals when they are optimally engaged in their primary
activities. Flow is experienced when there is a positive match between
a person’s strengths and their current task (i.e., when someone feels
confident of conducting a chosen or assigned task).
3. A meaningful life. This is also known as a life of affiliation. Seligman looks
at how individuals derive a positive sense of wellbeing, belonging,
meaning and purpose because they are part of and can give back to
something larger and more permanent than themselves (e.g., nature,
social groups organisations, movements, traditions, and belief systems).
(Study guide, page 3-4).
1.2) The introduction of a healthy school environment will not help learners,
as obesity is a genetic condition, and nothing can be done about it.
Provide an argument against the view expressed above. Pay careful
attention to the mark allocation for this question.
Education, clean air and water, physical activity, healthy food, and access
to health care are some of the core elements of a healthy school
environment. Obesity on the other hand is a disorder associated to excess
body fat. It results from taking excess calories compared to the amount that
the body can burn. The treatment for obesity includes regular exercise and a
lifestyle change including the diet which plays a massive role in the treatment
process. The components for a healthy school environment include physical
exercise and healthy food which are the recommendations for treating
obesity. Also, in life orientation physical education takes place, also, learning
about our bodies plays a crucial factor. Showing learners what are healthy
foods, by proving it and expressing it in the classroom. The idea of
introduction of a healthy school environment I strongly agree would reduce
chances of obesity and go a long way to treating those already affected.
