P3- Explain why a process of implementing the least restrictive interventions first should always be
used

The least restrictive interventions should always be used when dealing with incidents. But why is
this? Well in my P3, task I will explain why a process of implementing the least restrictive
interventions first should always be used.

Why should least restrictive interventions first always be used

The least restrictive interventions should always be used firstly when dealing with incidents of
challenging behaviour. But why is this? I believe this is because full blown restrictions and restrictive
measures are invasive to an individual and ultimately deny them of their freedom which is
unacceptable except in distrust circumstances. A child who swore at a teacher wouldn’t be given
capital punishment, as it is completely unnecessary and ultimately extremely unacceptable. Going to
the most vulgar and lengthy punishments can also be very intimidating and freighting too the person
being punished also. Additionally, the application of strict punishments first negatively promotes
positive behaviour, being given the worst punishment never benefits anyone. The least restrictive
interventions and measures create a good mindset for any challenging behaviour and allows the
opportunity of improvement of behaviour before stricter measures can be implemented. People
who are put on stricter measures are those who are deemed extremely dangerous or those who
have had least restrictive interventions and learnt nothing from them. So I believe, to allow the
ability to change and improve behaviour that the least restrictive interventions should always be
used first.

However, with my statement above being said, depending on the severity of the behaviour will
depend on the restrictive measures. So if a student was to murder another student you wouldn’t just
put them in detention and that be that, serious measures would need to be implied as the case is
very serve. So we can see circumstances do vary. However, for less serve scenarios, implementing
the least restrictive measures is definitely beneficial.

In regards to my P2 task my case study of Tom, applying the least restrictive measures on him could
also benefit him and improve his behavior positively. Tom could be spoken with discretely outside
with teachers regarding his behavior or spoken to in a class discussion to see how is behavior is
wrong. Tom could receive the least restrictive interventions i.e. removal from lesson or positioning in
a different seat to try and get on top of and improve his behavior and prevent him from acting
angrily or having a poor relationship with others.
