P6- Explain how public health is protected
For my P6 task, I will explain how public health is protected, what protects public health in the UK and
how it protects public health.
How public health is protected
Public health in any society and country is a paramount concern. The importance of public health is seen
in government messages, initiatives, programs and protections methods and tactics as seen in current
times of COVID. Public health itself is protected in several ways, and it is important such ways are strong
to enable public health to continuously around the clock be protected. Public health is protected several
ways through immunisation, disease surveillance, health and genetic screening programs, water
disposal/treatment, the supply of safe water, pollution control, control of food preparation, targeting
climate change and storage and sale. All these ways collectively are regularly monitored and work to
target and protect public health as a whole and prevent us from ill-health or poor states of health. But
what are these ways of protecting public health and how do they protect public health? Well, below I
will explain how such methods and techniques protect public health and prevent poor public health.
, Immunisation
Immunisation is the first way of protecting public health I will explain. Immunisation is an effective and
crucial way of protecting public health and preventing ill-health, infection and disease. Immunisation is
defined as the process of “fortifying the immune system against an agent”. Although this definition is
very heady and confusing, it makes sense and in other words, protects the immune system against and
agent which could be a disease or infection some sort. Immunisation commonly takes place and is
carried out with a needle injecting a protective substance that allows our bodies and immune system to
better fight of diseases if we come into contact with them. Taking the flu jab for example. The flu jab is
commonly a yearly very important occurrence that involves immunisation, an injection into the arm to
vaccinate you from the flu. What this vaccination does it protect you from the flu and the danger the flu
can bring.
Immunisation is important in terms of public health as it protects us and prevents us from contracting
serious diseases such as hepatitis A, flu, smallpox, polio and rabies. The big success of immunisation
programs has been influential in bringing some diseases under control, both polio and smallpox are no
longer a threat in the UK, thanks to immunisation. Immunisation is an imperative protective factor for
public health, it protects all of us from dangerous diseases damaging to health, prevents death to
disease, and the whole community from infection and the spread of infection. If individuals are
immunised from disease and infection, disease and infection spread much slower. Immunisation in
current times of COVID has been imperative. With the COVID vaccination being delivered widely across
the UK, immunisation is taking place and lives are being saved and millions are being vaccinated by the
week in an attempt to prevent COVID deaths and protect the nation. In this country to date, over
12.000.000 people have been vaccinated and this continues to grow quickly. The program for
immunisation will be completed in the summer of 2021, where almost 68 million currently live.
All in all, immunisation protects public health, by preventing ill-health, disease, infection, death and a
collective nationwide decline in health. Without immunisation, how would we be protected from the flu
and polio, and would they still spread ravenously? These programs for prevention happen on an annual
basis to protect against preventable deaths from a common disease. Younger children are given a nasal
spray to protect them and to stop them becoming key in spreading the Flu viruses.
