Unit 1
M1- Assess the usefulness of theories of communication within health and social care
environments.
How useful are the theories?
As in my previous task I took time to research the theories of communication commonly
used in Health Care and Social Care settings. I identified what they are, the main key points
and who came up with these theories. I will now talk about how useful these theories are
when communicating in various health and social care sector situations. All these theories
are used in different ways in communicating whether non-verbal or verbal they are all great
theories and work in different ways.
The communication cycle
The success in health care sectors relies on how professionals communicate with the service
user. And the communication cycle shows how we create a message and send, it that makes
this theory useful. There are advantages and disadvantages of the communication cycle and
I will speak about both sides.
Advantages
The advantages of the communication cycle are that it helps you understand the person you
are communicating with more clearly. Because it allows you to think before you say
something so you know the correct way to say the message so you are not misunderstood.
This shows reflective listening also when using the communication cycle in one to one
communication it provides a base for the conversation. As the communication cycle is
ideally meant to suit one to one communication when communicating with a service user,
this becomes an effective tool in these situations. Recognising the correct pace of how to
use the cycle, such as allowing the receiver time to compute the information they have been
given effectively. This helps with thinking time.
