Assignment week 2

1. How might knowing the various components of the communication process
help you in your academic life, your professional life, and your civic life?
The four key elements within the communication process are encoding, medium of
transmission, decoding, and feedback. By knowing these and being able to apply
them on an academic level, you will come across as more professional. This could
affect your status within a company. Besides that, it is of course easier to
communicate with people and avoid miscommunications.

2. Use the transaction model of communication to analyse a recent
communication encounter you had. Sketch out the communication encounter
and make sure to label each part of the model (communicators; message;
channel; feedback; and physical, psychological, social, relational, and cultural
contexts).
A conversation I had with my classmate a few days ago. The communicators were
me and the guy, his message to me was that he got hit by a part of the bus when it
was about to leave the bus stop. The channel was just via a text, he then called me
to elaborate, and we even communicated in real life after he arrived at the campus.
My feedback to him was asking if he was okay and trying to figure out how that
could even happen. As far as context: he was in the bus texting me while I was
arriving to my lecture room. I had to laugh since he was being very dramatic about
it, unfortunately he did not find it as funny. I knew it would be fine since he is my
friend and we can now make jokes and laugh about it. He is not Dutch, so he may
not have been used to how the public transport works over here, causing confusion
in the cultural context.

3. Take a look at two languages and compare their inventory. What are the
difference between those two languages? What are the distinct units? Is there
in difference in how these units combine?
Dutch and German. The biggest difference is probably the grammatical cases since
we do not really have those in Dutch (Nominativ, Dativ etc.) Besides that, German
uses capitals for nouns which the Dutch language does not. In terms of verb tenses,
I would say they are similar and of course the languages sound quite the same.
