, QUESTION 1
1.1“For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a
miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after
world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help
us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what
community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die”.
One critical strategy I would use to assist learners to understand this text is reflecting
to your beliefs and values. Sometimes the learners’ beliefs about an issue are
difficult to express because they are so ingrained. To discover these beliefs, it is
important to explore how a text challenges them. I will ask learners questions like
“does it make you feel disturbed, threatened, ashamed, or inspired?”. Many learners
may have a strong reaction to the text because of what books means to them. Not
everyone learns about the aspects of life by reading a book, some learn by
experiencing, watching documentaries or even listening to other people’s
experiences. So, I will instruct the learners to identify the points in the text where
they feel their beliefs are being challenged and choose one or two of the most
troubling challenges and analyse their feelings about them.
