Level 2 Diploma in Care Learner Name: ***

Unit Title: 211 – Implement person-centred approaches in care settings
Assessor
Use Only-
Learner statement Assessment
Criteria Met
Learner to provide narrative under each statement of how they meet the criteria. However, where the
assessment criteria asks you to ‘Demonstrate’ this may be covered during your observation with your
assessor and if so you are not required to provide written narrative. This will be stated under the
assessment criteria so please read carefully.

You must provide answers to each question that allow your assessor to properly assess what work duties
you are doing or what role you have within your work. It expected that you will need approximately 300
words per question. The more detail you provide the less likely your account will be sent back for more
clarification.

You must answer each question in your own words and write in the first person meaning “I do this”. A tip is
always to keep in mind the “who, why, how, where and when” in each answer.

Learning Outcome 1: Understand person-centred approaches for care and support

1.1 Define person‐centred values

I can define person-centred values as treating the individuals that I support as an equal partner in their own care
provision and have an important role deciding how they are supported.

The interests of the individual should always remain at the centre of all the work I do.

, Some of the values associated with a person-centred approach include rights, dignity, identity, individuality, respect,
privacy, choice and independence.

1.2 Explain why it is important to work in a way that embeds person‐centred values

For me, it is important to work in a way that embeds person-centred values because it allows the individual to feel
valued and respected.

An individual receiving care often has the most expertise in understanding what their own needs, preferences and
wishes are and so should be treated as an expert when it comes to their own care planning.

According to me, working in a person-centred way can help an individual to feel human and that their views and
opinions are being listened to. This, in turn, can have a positive effect on their own identity, self-worth, self-esteem
and self-confidence. In the past individuals in the care system have been encouraged to be risk-averse or been told
they cannot take risks in order to protect them and because they were deemed not to have the capacity to make
decisions.

However, just as we all take risks in our day-to-day lives – it is simply a part of living – and individuals in adult care
should be no different.

In addition, I would say that a person-centred approach respects the rights of the individual and gives them control in
their life, rather than becoming a passive receiver of care.

1.3 Explain why risk‐taking can be part of a person‐centred approach

For me, risk-taking is a very important part of a person-centred approach.
