Factors that influence the building of positive relationships

In a health, social and childcare setting there are many factors that influence communication. In this
piece I am going to be focusing on 5 factors and talking about how this applies to influencing the
building of relationships in my chosen settings. Building relations is important because having an
effective relationship with the service user can ensure that they are happy about using your service
and it allows them to be able to have the best care possible. The 5 factors I will be talking about in
the paragraphs bellow are: communication, environmental, physical, spiritual and cultural.

In this assignment I am going to be talking about all of the different factors that influence the
building of positive relationships. Iam going to be talking about how these factors would come into
play when you are providing or accessing the service of my two chosen settings that I talked about in
L01 (dentistry and an independent living worker).

Communication

Theories of communication

Social psychologist Michael Argyle developed the Argyle theory in 1972 as a result of his research
into human communication and conversations between people. He believed that interpersonal
relationships was like learning how to drive a car. Argyle first explained that “human communication
is a process that involves people sending and responding to messages in a non-verbal and verbal
way.” As a result of Argyle's work, in 1972 he developed the 'communication cycle', which aims to
demonstrate how people communicate when they are one-to-one. The cycle is made up of six main
steps and the steps involve, being able to understand and observe how people communicate. It is
also about being able to reflect and listen to what the person is saying so that we understand and
are able to respond to it correctly.

Psychologist Bruce Tuckman developed the Tuckman theory (consisting of 5 stages) in 1965. “The
idea behind the model is you can’t expect a new team to form and perform to the best of their
abilities. It takes each member of the team some time to interact with their group members and
adjust themselves to their work culture and environment.” The model explains how a team’s
maturity and ability develops and relationships establish as leadership style changes. in 1965 the
theory consisted of 4 stages: forming, storming, norming and performing areas but later in 1970s he
adapted the theory and added a 5th stage called adjourning. This model is helpful in training people
for group work and works up to their full potential.

Psychologist Gerard Egan developed the SOLER theory in 1975. He believed that non-verbal
communication can greatly improve the effectiveness of communication between individuals. It
reminds us that its body language is equally as important when communication with people. SOLER
stand for: Sit squarely, Open posture, Lean towards the other, Eye contact, Relax. The components
of the SOLAR model can also be considered as the core of active listening, supporting the message
