Essay on Drug Legalization
“It’s not a war on drugs, it’s a war on personal freedom”, these are the words of Bill
Hicks an American stand-up comedian. Public authorities believe that prohibiting drugs may
reduce its abuse. However, abolishing legal market for drugs doesn‘t eradicate all use, and
the residual consumption sustains black markets that generate other social problems including
crime, violence, and corruption.
It is undoubtedly true that drugs are illegal in view of the fact that they normally contain
psychoactive substances that may lead to deadly consequences. Nevertheless, some of these
same drugs consist of other elements that have the ability to save lives.
The political and economic instability caused the majority of the Lebanese population to be
drug dependent with marijuana being the most used substance after alcohol. Although the
cannabis plant contains THC, a cannabinoid responsible for most psychoactive effects in the
body, in fact another chemical compound is found in this plant, CBD. This molecule
contributes to help people in the medical field especially when treating cancer patients. CBD
has a wide range of therapeutic effects on anxiety and stress, also relevant to the management
of cancer. With more 18.1 million cancer cases in 2020, I believe it is necessary to
acknowledge the importance of marijuana and other drugs that may cure terminal illnesses or
at least help suffering patients. As a matter of fact, numerous countries such as Malta,
Canada, Georgia, Thailand, Mexico…have come to legalize the use of medical marijuana.
Another reason that explains why drugs are illegal resides in their rapid spread amongst
young people establishing a psychoactive diseased society. Nonetheless, isn’t the youth a
victim of these substances?
