Topic 16 - Kinetics 2
Reaction Rates
Define reaction rate
the reaction rate is the change in the amount of reactants or products per
unit time
Name the main 6 methods of continuous monitoring to follow the rate of a
reaction
gas volume
loss of mass
colour change
change in pH
titration
electrical conductivity
Outline a titrimetric method to measure the change in concentration of an
alkali with time
take samples at various times
Topic 16 - Kinetics 2 1
, then titrate with acid of known concentration using an indicator
Suggest why rate the above exothermic reaction could be higher than
expected
rate is higher than expected as it is exothermic so heat energy is released
during the reaction so there are more collisions with energy larger than the
activation energy
Orders of Reaction
What is the zero order?
when concentration doubles there is no change in rate of reaction
What is the first order?
when concentration doubles, the rate of reaction also doubles
What is the second order?
when concentration increases by 3 times, the rate of reaction increases by 9
times
Give the shapes of a concentration-time graph and a rate-concetration graph
for a zero order reaction
