The blended mode also means that you have access to printed and online material. The printed material in this module include Tutorial Letter 101, Tutorial Letter 501, prescribed textbooks and other printed materials to which you may be referred. On the other hand, online material refers to all the electronic material that is used in the module such as online Tutorial Letter 101, Tutorial Letter 501, etutoring, discussion forums, virtual class presentations, among others. 2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES 2.1 Purpose This module forms part of the first-year English Studies when taken in conjunction with the module ‘Foundations in English Literary Studies (ENG1501). The module aims to introduce students to a systematic description of the English Language and to introduce students to the grammatical competences needed to apply their knowledge to the analysis of authentic language data. The module will introduce meta-language terminology in the discipline of Applied English language studies, which is essential for advanced proficiency and literacy development. The module will equip students with the skills of Applied English language studies (such as writing/rhetoric studies, and discourse studies). Students will be able to apply their understanding and skills to the English language as it functions in various real-life contexts and domains The module also serves at present as a service module for the Senior Phase and FET College of Education students who are completing various Bachelor of Education qualifications.

1 INTRODUCTION
The ENG1502 is a blended module. Blended simple means engagement between students and
lecturers will happen, across two modalities, online, and offline. The blended mode also means

Tutorial Letter 101, Tutorial Letter 501, prescribed textbooks and other printed materials to
which you may be referred. On the other hand, online material refers to all the electronic
material that is used in the module such as online Tutorial Letter 101, Tutorial Letter 501, e-
tutoring, discussion forums, virtual class presentations, among others.



2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES
2.1 Purpose

This module forms part of the first-year English Studies when taken in conjunction with the

Students understand and explain the grammatical and functional structure of the English
Language.
