Pedagogie = pais (=kind); agogein (leer)  studie van de opvoeding van kinderen en jongeren (0-18)

Pedagogiek = handelingswetenschap

- Wil komen tot inzichten die bruikbaar zijn in de praktijk van de opvoeding
- Handelen van opvoeders staat centraal

b. Ontstaan pedagogiek
Ontstaan van pedagogie als wetenschap:

- Pedagogiek bestaat al lang
- We spreken al lang van opvoeden (onbewust)
- Voorbeeld : Griekse oudheid – De Spartaanse opvoeding
 Grootbrengen buiten het gezin zodat ze zelfstandig hun weg vinden
 Doelen: lichamelijke ontwikkeling en discipline

Opvoedingsthema was vroeger thema voor de filosofen:

- Rechtvaardige opvoeding – Aristoteles
- Kritische vragen leren stellen – Socrates
- Nature opvoeding is overbodig en schuldig aan verderf

Pedagogiek als wetenschap = jong

- Eerste leerstoel aan de universiteit van Halle (Duitsland) – 1979
- Als wetenschap dus pas laat invloed op het werkveld
 Decroly in België (belang leefwereld kind)
