Helloclass, • Whyisknowingyouraudienceanimportantpartofcapturingandmaintainingtheirattention? Since you do not know where your audience stand on the issue of which you arecommunicating,thereareafewthingsyoumustassume.Accordingto(Seyler,2018),youmustassume thatpartofyouraudiencemayneveragreewith you, butthey mayoffergrudging respect if you give an effective argument. There are also going to be people inthe audience who do not hold strong view one way or the other. While there will be somewho may agree with your views but would like a strong argument to support their views.Grabbing and keeping your audience’s attention requires you to all these views in yourmind when communicatingwithan audienceon any giventopic. • Whatcultural considerationsdoyouneedtotakeintoaccountforyourparticularaudience/topic? When communicating with cross cultures on a particular topic, you need to considertranslations of verbal, written, and nonverbal communication. It is important to rememberthat American culture is not universal worldwide. You need to take the time to learn theways of the culture of which you are communicating with. It could be the differencebetween two cultures coming together and having a bad misunderstanding. You also needto be able to have patience, speak slowly, and clearly so that it is easier to be understood.Even with these factors in place, must be prepared to have your audience ask questions orrepeating yourself. • Howareyougoingto keepthe audience'sattentionthroughoutthe speech? ThereareafewthingsIwoulddotokeeptheaudience’sattentionthroughoutthespeech.I would start by making sure that all materials needed for my presentation or speechwould ready and accounted for. If I am using a power point or some other type oftechnology,Iwouldmakesurethateverythingisinworkingorderbeforemyspeech. Once I began my speech, I would make sure that I could relate and connect with myaudience. I would also make sure that I would maintain eye contact throughout myspeech. I would also make sure that I would stay true to myself and others by makingsure that I give accurate data and information to my audience. I would also make surethat the audience would be able to see the sincerity and passion of my speech whilemaintaining a normal speaking voice. I would also maintain in my speech both sides oftheofthetopicofwhich Iamspeakingabout.WhileIcanacknowledge opposingviews, and include them into my speech, I can also give reasons and show why those view maynot be correct. Showing my audience both side of a view and giving a differentperspective would be a good way in keeping their attention throughout my speech. Withallofthese factorsin place, wouldbeessential indelivering aneffectivespeech. • Find at least one example on YouTube, TEDx, or other video repositories of goodattention-getting examples. Post the URL and explain how the video is a good model forcapturingtheaudience'sattention. The videocan beonanytopicbut mustbeappropriate forsharing. Zachary R. Wood does well in his TEDx video with keeping his audience attentionthroughout his speech by explaining his experience of being in a college group. In hisgroup, he brought controversial speakers to campus. He was trying to show why it isimportanttolistentopeopleyoumaydisagreewith.Thereason hewasdoing thiswasbecause he felt that to get a better/deeper understanding of society, you also needed tounderstand theopposingviews (Wood, 2018). • Makesureto include ascholarly sourcetosupportyourpoints.
