NUR 514 TECHNOLOGY IN NURSING 1 Technology in Nursing Student’s Name Institution TECHNOLOGY IN NURSING 2 New health care innovations offer the advanced registered nurse an opportunity to apply emerging technologies in practice to improve quality and patient outcomes. For this assignment, research an emerging health care technology that you think has the potential to overcome current or emerging barriers to care. Write a 500-word brief that provides an overview of the technology, its purpose, and how it would function in a health care setting, including any ethical or legal issues that would accompany the incorporation of the technology. Discuss how this technology could improve access to care and promote patient safety and quality. Refer to the Topic 6 materials for samples and resources to help you construct your brief. You are required to cite three to five sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content. The use of technology improves health care efficiency, quality, safety and the cost in the medical facilities. However, people may consider the use of similar technology to introduce some errors in the workplace. Registered nurses use technology for example the use of computers in ordering and scheduling medication for their patients. One of the common emerging technology in the health care is the introduction and use of computers. Registered nurses use computers in patient care documentation and procuring medicine from various medical suppliers. This has been made possible with such systems as the Electronic health records (EHRs) and Electronic medical records (EMRs).Computers and monitoring equipment are used in almost every aspect of nursing. Most of these applications used by the registered nurses are wireless. Today, nurses must know how to apply technology safely and appropriately in their daily activities (Nagel, 2017). Computer technology is used by nurses when attending to their patients because of several advantages it has. Computers are used by nurses for timekeeping and scheduling purposes in order for them to order medications for their patients. This will reduce delays in the health care. Computers are used by nurses in finding out more information on a particular TECHNOLOGY IN NURSING 3 disorder or disease that the patient has. Electronic health records or electronic medical records has been successful with computers (Maillet, Mathieu, & Sicotte, 2015). These systems are used in keeping important information about the patients in the health care facility. Electronic medical record can be used by nurses in documenting medication dosages in patients. The use of computers by nurses enhances an easy access to medication by patients hence leading to an increase in efficiency. Nurses record the patient’s personal health-care history and the treatment to give on the electronic health record. The use of this system makes it easier to monitor the progress of a patient in the hospital. The use of computers helps the nurses in accessing important clinical knowledge for example information on drugs, nursing assessments in order to understand the health situation in the healthcare. Computers use database in keeping and maintaining important records in the health care setting. Patient files which have complete digital scans and X-rays are kept safely by use of the database in the computer. This is because computer database has an easy and large storage option, which is used in keeping huge amount of information. The database only provides an easy access to the staff members of the health care facility (Hung, Tsai, & Chuang, 2014). Internal computers in the monitors are used in the interpretation of all the data that have been collected and display them in a more meaningful way. This makes the information to be understood by the users in the health care facility. The computers are used in surgical activities in the medical facilities. This is achieved through the use of minimally invasive tools, which reduces the chances of a patient to suffer from complications. It helps in reducing damages, which can be done to the body of a patient in the theartre.Minimally invasive tools use computers to drive the tools and relay images from an individual’s body for the nurse to see. TECHNOLOGY IN NURSING 4 It is important for nurses to observe ethics when using computers in the health care. The use of electronic health records should always maintain respect and dignity for the patient autonomy. Patients should be allowed to make their own decisions in the health care. The decisions must be made about the access and ownership of the records in the computer. Nurses should ensure that the computers used are user friendly and fully integrated to ensure fairness in the health care. Computers should ensure privacy and confidentiality of important information on the patients. Electronic health records should be able to maintain a high level of data security in the medical care. Computers promote patient safety and quality because the use of this technology has several applications that are used in the health care facility (Boonen, Vosman, & Niemeijer, 2017).
