1. Autism is associated with hyperactivity, avoidance of eye contact, impulsivity,
aggression, self- harm, recurrent actions and behaviors, temper tantrums. Autism
children are able to toilet train.
2. Delirium – rapid onset. Usually lasts less than 10 days. Delirium manifests as rapid,
rambling speech, rapid changes in mood (labile), altered level of consciousness,
confusion, restlessness, agitation, hallucinations and illusions.
3. Dementia – Slow, insidious onset. Give one direction at a time. Home safety list review.
Limit choices to avoid frustration. Consistent meal/med times, schedules, care providers.
Expect emotional outbursts, paranoia, delusions, illusions, hallucinations as disease
progresses. Gradual loss of memory. Know perseveration (repeating words or phrases)
versus confabulation (defense mechanism to fill in gaps of missing memory). Do not
attempt to correct false beliefs in later stages.
4. Personality Disorders
a. Borderline (Contract for self-harm, set limits and stick to them, do not allow
them to manipulate the staff, use DBT. Do not show too much attention.
Frequently rotate staff members to prevent splitting of staff.)
b. Histrionic (Monitor attempts at attention seeking during groups. Need for
admiration and attention is extreme. Relationships are seen as closer than they
are. Craves novelty, stimulation and excitement. Dresses in expensive clothing,
provocative and seductive.)
c. Paranoid (Suspicious of others, holds grudges, perceives others actions as
negative and demeaning towards them)
d. Schizoid (aloof)
e. Schizotypal
f. Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Inflated sense of self-importance and
extreme preoccupation with self. Often lacks empathy.
g. Antisocial (Manipulation, exploitation and violation of others rights is key.)
h. Dependent (Reward assertiveness and decision making. Exhibits clinging
behaviors and unable to make decisions for self.)
i. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder : Rigid adherence to daily
routines. Perfectionism. Failure to delegate tasks to others.
5. Therapeutic Communication Techniques: Never give advice, false reassurance, offer
too many suggestions, or sound rude. Use open ended questions to get more
