Entering variables and cases
● 1,2,3 etc: cases
● Var: variables
○ Name
○ Type: numeric
○ Label: brief description
○ Values: 1=female, 2= male etc. (not necessary for quantitative variables)
○ Measure: nominal (categorical), scale (interval or ratio), ordinal
○ Width: number of digits
○ Decimals
○ Missing: assign number for missing values
○ Role: input (explanatory), target (response)
● File → save as
● Edit→ insert variables
● Edit→insert cases
● Edit→clear
Describing and comparing data sets
● Analyze→descriptive stats→frequencies→enter variable list→under “statistics” choose
measures→”charts” choose chart type
● Analyze→compare means→means→dependent list (variable measured)→layers
(categorical variables-groups we want to compare)→”options” choose measures
● Analyze→reports→case summaries
basically the same with “compare means” function but can choose “display cases”
● Analyze→descriptive stats→descriptives→”option” (choose measures)
○ Doesn’t give frequency distributions like frequencies function, only stat summary
○ →click “save standardized values as variables” to get z-scores
