I as an Embodied Consciousness
Traditional Philosophy
• Plato / Augustine – man is essentially a soul
• Aristotle / Aquinas – man is a composite of body and soul (rational
soul); these elements created by God
• Descartes (Father of Modern Philosophy) – dualized man into “res
extrensa” (materially extended reality) and “res cogitans” (thinking
being); man has a body and mind
Scientific view
• Man is made up of a body, a brain, genes, etc. (man is a physical
reality)
Phenomenological description
• Gabriel Marcel
• Primary reflection (immediate perception of human experience) : I have
a body
• Secondary reflection (reality as a subject) : I am my body
We, as human beings, are embodied and are subjects/spirits/a
consciousness
