2 Tasks/ types of Questions
1. Personal choice -> important people, places, events, or activities the speaker
enjoys
2. Paired choice -> hot country vs seasonal country, renting vs owning a house,
private vs group classes
Tips
1. Be honest with yourself, don’t take the test unless you’re ready
2. Have a notebook to write ideas
3. Have at least 2 reasons/ examples
4. Don’t become obsessed with the clock
5. Relax -> there is no ‘right’ answer
6. Practice with a teacher, friend, partner or in front of a mirror
Testing Sequence for the Beginning of the Test and the Independent Speaking Task
Knowing the testing sequence for answering the TOEFL iBT Speaking questions prior to
taking the test will save you time and effort when you take the actual test.
The following guidelines will help you be confident when it is time to deliver your answer.
Familiarize yourself with the process and review the steps each time you prepare for the
Speaking section of the test.
1. The Speaking test begins with a volume and microphone check to make sure your
equipment is working and can capture your responses adequately. Follow the on-
screen directions to complete the check.
2. The Directions screen will come up for the Speaking tasks. After you read the
directions carefully, click on the Dismiss Directions button.
3. The Independent Speaking task will begin.
4. Listen to the question; you will then have 15 seconds to prepare your response.
5. The on-screen clock will count down the seconds while you are preparing. The
question will continue to display on the screen while you prepare and also while you
deliver your response.
6. You will then hear a “beep” when your preparation time is over.
7. Begin delivering your spoken response; you will have up to 45 seconds to speak.
8. The on-screen clock will count down 45 seconds during your response.
9. You will hear a second “beep” indicating the time is over for your response.
