To Kill A Mockingbird Part One (Chapters 1-11) Study Guide Already Graded A What happened to Jem when he was nearly thirteen? When Jem was nearly 13, he got his arm badly broken at the elbow. His left arm was shorter than his right and the back of his hand was at right angle to his body, and his thumb parallel to his thigh. How did Simon Finch make his money? Simon Finch made his money by being a fur trapping pharmacist. He also built a house and lived there for decades. Where does this story take place (give details)? This story takes place in Maycomb, Alabama. Maycomb is a small farm town and is poor because of the Great Depression. Why do you think the children call their father Atticus rather than Dad? They call their father Atticus rather than Dad because it is a way to respect him as an individual. They also called him Atticus because they were raised differently than normal people and everybody called their dad Atticus. What does Atticus Finch do for a living? Atticus Finch is a defense lawyer for a living. Who were his first two clients? What happened to them? Why? How did this case change Atticus as a lawyer? Atticus's first two clients were the Havords aka Jacka**'s. They were the last two people hanged in Maycomb because they refused to take Atticus's advice to plead guilty to a lesser charge. They killed a blacksmith in a misunderstanding over a dispute of a mare. This event changed Atticus as a lawyer because he didn't want people to work for people who wouldn't listen to his advice. What does the author mean by "There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County."? Why did the people of Maycomb have no money? The author means that the people were poor and had nowhere to go so life was slow because this story took place during the Great Depression. The people of Maycomb had no money because the crash hit rural areas (Maycomb) the hardest. What happened to the narrator's mother? How did her death affect the narrator? How did it affect Jem? The narrator's mother died of a heart attack when Scout was 2 and Jem was 6. Scout was not affected by the death of her mother because she didn't remember her mother but on the other hand Jem misses her a lot. Describe Dill. Why has he come to Maycomb? What does Dill claim to have done with the "beautiful child" money? Dill is small for his age, has fluffy white hair and can read. His real name is Charles Baker Harris. He came to Maycomb because he is staying with his aunt, Miss Rachel Haverford for the summer. Dill claimed that he went to 20 picture shows (movies in modern day) on the money he won from the "Beautiful Child" contest. Explain how the children spend their summer. What do they do for fun? The children spent their summer by acting out plays from books they have read in the past. Give 2-3 examples of rumors about the Radley house and its inhabitants. 1- The pecans from the Radley's garden will kill you. 2- Boo Radley ate the neighborhood's chickens and pets even though it was Crazy Addie. 3-Azaleas would freeze if Boo Radley breathed on them. What did Arthur Radley and the other boys do that got them in trouble? Why was Arthur locked in the Radley house? Arthur Radley (Boo Radley) and his friends stole a car and locked the officer in the courthouse outhouse. Arthur was locked in the Radley's house because his father thought it was a disgrace to send him away. What did Atticus mean when he told the children there were "other ways of making people into ghosts"? Atticus meant that there are other reasons why Boo Radley hasn't been seen for over 15 years. Describe Miss Stephanie Crawford. Miss Stephanie Crawford is the town's gossiper. Describe Boo Radley, according to Jem's description. According to Jem, Boo Radley is 6 ½ feet tall, has blood-stained hands from eating raw squirrels and cats, drools all the time and has yellow teeth. Dill and Jem make a bet at the end of this chapter. What is their deal? What does Jem do to win the bet? Dill bets Jem a book that he won't touch the Radley's house at the end of the chapter. Jem slaps the Radley's house to win the bet. Describe Miss Caroline. Where is she from? Why does this make her first day as a teacher even more difficult? She is a very young, first time teacher, with no experience in the classroom. She dresses very nicely, and is from a county in northern Alabama that is more wealthy than Maycomb. She has never seen or dealt with the poverty that exists in her new classroom. She is also idealistic, trying the "Dewey Decimal System" way of teaching, with was much different. Explain Jem and Scout's interpretation of the Dewey Decimal teaching system that Miss Caroline uses. The Dewey Decimal System makes you learn from experience more than relying on books. Scout gets in trouble twice on the first day of school. What does she do to get in trouble? 1. She is able to read at a very high level and Miss Caroline does not know what to do with her. 2. She is able to write in cursive, which they do not teach until 3rd grade. 3. She tried to explain about Walter Cunningham, which embarrassed and angered Miss Caroline. Why won't Walter Cunningham take Miss Caroline's money? The Cunninghams are very poor, but at the same time proud. They do not take charity from anyone and do not accept anything that they cannot repay. What do the Cunninghams do when they cannot pay for a service? They repay their debts through trade. They will give firewood, nuts, etc. until their debt is sufficiently repaid. How do the people of Maycomb "seal" contracts and deals? They spit in hands and shake. What happens to Scout when she tells Miss Caroline about the Cunningham family? It angers and embarrasses Miss Caroline, who yells at Scout, spanks her hand with a ruler and sticks her facing the corner. How does Walter claim he almost died his first year of school? He almost died because he ate the pecans from the Radley's house that fell onto the school yard. Why has Walter been unable to pass the first grade? He has to spend time working for his family part of the school year. What does Walter do at dinner that surprises
