G = Germany
LoN = League of Nations

Hitler's foreign policy, the League of Nations and Crises:

Second Anschluss: (1938)
- 1934: Mussolini stopped Hitler from completing
Anschluss.
- 1936: Stresa Front broke.
- 1938: Hitler - now had no opposition.

Second Anschluss events:

1) Schuschnigg: (Austrian chancellor) asked Hitler for
help after a Nazi plot to overthrow the Austrian
government was discovered; Hitler refused + forced him
to appoint Seys-Inquart as head of police.

,2) Hitler: encouraged Nazi riots + demonstrations in
Austria.
3) Schuschnigg: called for a plebiscite to pacify rioters.
4) Hitler: moved German troops to the Austrian border
+ forced Schuschnigg to resign.
5) Seys-Inquart: became Austrian chancellor + invited
German troops (to restore order) in Austria + handed
power to Hitler.
Hitler: conducted a plebiscite: 99% of people agreed with
Anschluss (as 80,000 opponents were sent to
concentration camps).
France + Britain's reaction: they did nothing - thought
the Treaty of Versailles was "a harsh treaty" + the
Anschluss "fulfilled self-determination".
Aims achieved for Hitler: Abolish ToV, create Lebensraum
(living space), unite German speaking people.

, Sudetenland Crisis:
Sudetenland was industrial land (contained 3 million
G.S.P - Hitler used this as excuse to annex it).
Would achieve his aim of: uniting G.S.P.

Events:
Hitler: encouraged Sudetens to ask for independence +
riot.
Sudeten leaders + Hitler: demanded S.D for Sudetens.
Czechoslovakia: refused + prepared for war.
Chamberlain used appeasement
