NSG C919 Facilitation of Context-Based Student-Centered Learning August 16, 2021. Facilitation of Context-Based Student-Centered Learning: Course Outline Nursing education is unique in that the student has to learn the theoretical concepts and apply that knowledge in a clinical setting. This is partnered with clinical skills that must be learned and practiced to master. A nursing instructor then is faced with the task of teaching students to critically think. To complete the task, instructors in nursing have to adopt the context-based learning (CBL) method. This nontraditional method of teaching is used to engage nursing students in self-directed work. When a student-centered learning environment is created, the student becomes the teacher and learner at the same time. Students retain more information when they can actively learn through scenarios, teaching to peers, and other activities. This teaching style is also known as flipping the classroom where instructors use their clinical expertise in the classroom. Aspects of the Course The learner will benefit from this course by engaging in scholarly inquiry to discover the impact of nurses on community health. By studying the history of the American healthcare system, students will gain the foundational knowledge to challenges in community health that affect populations. Research is an integral part of community health. Students will research social determinants of health to gain insight into reasons for variances in disease rates in vulnerable populations. Some specific concepts of this course include social determinants of health, change agents, and research. These concepts will allow the student to do proper and specific research about the community they serve, specific problems that may be due to social determinants of health, and how they can become an agent of change and bring awareness and change to a community. These concepts are relevant to the nursing profession as nurses are advocates for vulnerable populations and often find themselves working with leaders in 3 collaboration to bring about change. Nurses work the "front lines" and know patient needs and can identify some disconnect in the continuum of care happens. Therefore, nurses make great change agents. A community health course can add to professional nursing by making nurses more culturally competent and improving communities' overall health outlook. Activities within this course include simulation exercises that stimulate learning and bring clinical to the classroom. The QSEN Institute (QSEN) is an accreditation authoritative body that creates and governs learning objective and competencies for nursing programs. QSEN competencies of informatics use technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making just as the student will by doing projects to create initiatives and using technology to communicate their plan in week 6. (QSEN Institute, 2021). QSEN competencies include patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. (QSEN Institute, 2021). The course overview aligns with these principles as it outlines that the course is focused on patient-centered care and providing quality improvement through teamwork and collaboration using evidence-based practices for community health improvement Cultivation of Course The eight-week module topics will cultivate the development of the course by breaking down the various aspects of community health into induvial topics to help the learner build weekly on their knowledge. The topics were placed in order from foundational information that including the history of community health. The history of community health is the best foundational start to this course as it gives the learner insight into the developments that have been made and changes that took place to understand how community health is shaped today and also to identify laws and ideas that may be outdated and need to be revisited.
