Cystic Fibrosis is a severe chronic respiratory disease. CF is an autosomal recessive disorder meaning that both parents have to pass on the gene to the offspring in order to pass it on. Two mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CTFR) gene can lead to decreased secretion of chloride and increased reabsorption of sodium and water across the epithelial cells causing excessive production of secretions. This accumulation of fluids can result for the epithelial lining of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and reproductive tract.
