600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
Using authentic materials in foreign language is very valuable, even if it is not made for the
language teaching purpose. It provides more encouragement for the students and is definitely
engaging to explore authentic topics where students can exchange opinions about topics that truly
matter. In this way the students will learn more than only a new language. It also adds an extra
layer of interaction to the authenticity. It makes the lesson interesting and motivates students to
adopt the new language because they are able to make use of it immediately. It shows students
the actual language that is used in general and not for learning purposes and it adds a wide variety
of useful vocabulary. By using authentic reading materials I can provide information about a
subject that I want to share with my students.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
Since I am teaching a group of mixed nationality students, I have picked this particular topic that
would likely spark a lot of interest for the particular group of students presented to teach. It gives
students encouragement and a common topic to speak about. Talking about travelling spreads a
collective interest in all of them. A huge number of these students already have a broad
understanding of the country they currently live in, therefore they will be confident and
comfortable enough to discuss this topic.
The chosen vocabulary is significant to the given text and unlikely to be known by the students due
to their difficulty level. The text also has a lot of idioms that are important to understand the
context.
c) Why my activities are appropriate for this class:
Travel is important for everybody. I figured it would be fun and rather fascinating for the mixed
nationality students. I choose these particular activities as they give opportunity for practice and
making use of learned vocabulary. It is exciting and encouraging for students to express using new
words. Exploring is exciting for most people and it gives students a perspective of using the
language they learn. These activities are designed to consolidate and improve the language
students use. It simultaneously provides an educational aspect along with fun and practical ways of
applying new knowledge. Activities that I have chosen improve all aspects of the student’s
progression, including vocabulary range, speaking, writing and pronunciation.
