Introduction
It is undoubtedly true that popular culture has both negative and positive influences
on the standards of beauty in South Africa. This essay will initially consider the role
of mass media in the South African context, followed by the psychological effects of
stereotypes. The capitalist agenda will then be noted, and finally, job creation is
rendered a positive contribution of popular culture to beauty standards. The
understanding of beauty is being contaminated by globalised mass media structures
