DISCUSSION OF PLAGIARISM AND EXAMPLES.
Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their
consent, by incorporating it into your own work without full acknowledgement. All
published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is
involved in the definition mentioned. Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or
unintentional under the regulations for examinations, intentional or reckless plagiarism
is a disciplinary offence.
Reasons why plagiarism matter.
It is a breach of academic integrity, a principle of intellectual honesty that all members of
the academic community should acknowledge their debt to the originators of the ideas,
word and data which form which forms the basis for their own work (Oxford dictionary).
Taking another person’s work as your own is not only poor scholarship but can also
mean failing to finish or complete the learning process. Plagiarism involves misconduct,
degrading, can also be seen as stealing, unethical and have serious consequences for
your future career and also undermines the standards of the institution and degrees it
issues.
The following are the most common kinds of plagiarism.
Global plagiarism- Presenting someone else’s whole text as your own.
Paraphrasing- To phrase or express someone’s ideas without citation.
Verbatim- Directly duplicating someone else’s ideas without citation.
Mosaic- link text and ideas from various sources without citation.
Self-Plagiarism- Reusing one’s own specific words from previously published ideas or
text.
Incorrect citation- Failing to provide important information in your source of citation.
